Hubert Kaufmann’s works begin where digital images usually remain invisible. Some are made inside the sensor itself, in a closed camera that no light enters. What becomes visible is not the world but the material: heat, chance, the smallest fluctuations in the sensor. An image before every image, a pre-image. Others follow the path images take today before they reach us. Every device, every image carrier leaves its own trace along the way.
Every day, images are made with no world behind them, and they look credible. This is exactly where the works begin. They ask for no belief in what they show. They show what an image is made of before we believe it.
The image as event, not depiction. The work does not reassure. It makes the loss visible.
